as a fuel, oil is a very useful liquid material available on the earth and extracted from it with various methods , initially in a crude form and then after refining it is being used to fulfil different needs.
gas and oil are the same material but are in two different forms and sizes of hydrocarbons , both are petroleum and oil is in liquid form with a chain of longer hydrocarbons while gas is in gas form with a chain of reduced or shorter hydrocarbons , when hydrocarbons reduced and get shorter and break away then they give light oil or gas , from organic material oil always produced first and then on higher temperature and pressure it becomes gas , organic material never produce gas directly it always changed first into oil form and then into gas , and where oil is discovered gas is also somewhere near by but not in all cases ,

What is crude oil

crude oil is a highly flame able liquid substance naturally found in the land which is a mixture of mostly hydrogen and carbon with small quantity of 

some other particles like sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen , crude oil we can call it raw material of oil which is need to be reined for use , because when we extract oil from the earth it is a mixture of hydrocarbons along with small quantity of other chemical compounds that contains sulfur , nitrogen and oxygen and small amount of other compounds, this complex mixture of mention elements is crude oil , in refinery process what we do , we separate oil elements to get different petroleum products like gasoline , diesel ,propane and use them for various benefits.

How oil is formed,

both oil as well as gas is formed from the remains of living creatures like animals and plants,
when their dead bodies remain buried deep under the earth for millions of years ( takes 10 to more then 300 million years ) in heat and pressure then these remains turn into liquid form which we call crude oil, which is still need to refined for use, after refinery it become oil which we use to fulfil our various needs,
but
you may ask a question that if this is the case then why we don't see dead bodies turning into oil or gas when rotten, because in normal conditions environment is different so result is also different,
rotting bodies in open air or with out required pressure and temperature Will not make it gas, or oil which we use
but beneath the heavy mud and layer of the earth their are micro animals like bacteria can live alive without oxygen, so their is suffocation , no oxygen, pressure, heat and millions of years which take part to form these remains into oil ,
when they died and get under the earth it start forming layers of organic materials (remains of animals and plants ) with the passage of time these layers with new coming dead bodies become thick , with geological changes layer of dust and mud are covering them more and more and in long long period of time if an environment favour able for the process is created then this organic material will change its form and characteristics and eventually it Will turn into oil, it is similar to cooking things in pressure cooker,

How gas is formed ,

as i told u earlier the full process of forming oil beneath the earth that oil is formed by the remains of living creatures in the spam of millions of years deep under the earth, for gas is the same process but oil is the first form of petroleum that produced from the organic material in a chain of longer hydrocarbons but when temperature and pressure increase then hydrocarbons get shorter and break away, then they give light oil after some further increase in temperature it hydrocarbons get more shorter and change its form into gas,

with the help of latest technologies like satellite and global positioning systems, scientists and engineers they explores different parts of the lands where they examine and study rock samples of the land to find some signs ofpresence of oil , if signs are good then they drill a hole to drop pipes and tools into the well , but even after getting good signs of oil , they can not give guarantee unless oil is found ,they built a complete setup with all the requiredtools to suck oil from the earth,
